Basic Overnight Oats Recipe & Variations


When I was doing a 'fully raw' challenge a few weeks ago I ate overnight oats to replace my regular stovetop or baked versions. In my opinion nothing beats a warm breakfast to give you a comforting yet energising start to your day, but overnight oats are a fab alternative if you have a little less time to prepare breakfast in the morning or if the weather is simply too hot to eat anything that hasn't been chilling (pun not intended) in the fridge for a few hours. So I thought I'd share my basic overnight oats recipe with you all and give you a couple of different variations to keep things interesting! As well as the flavours in this post I've also got recipes for banoffee, carrot cake and lemon and coconut overnight oats.




Basic Overnight Oats


Ingredients
Serves 1
  • 2/3 cup oats
  • 2/3 cup milk of choice
  • 1 ripe banana


Method

Mash the banana and put it into a bowl with the oats and milk - mix well until everything is incorporated. You can either leave this mixture in the bowl and cover it with clingfilm or transfer it into an empty jar with a lid (I usually use an old jam jar). Leave it in the fridge to soak overnight, top it with whatever you like in the morning and enjoy!




Variations


Cacao
Add 1 tbsp cacao powder to the rest of the ingredients.

Chocolate Orange
Reduce the milk to 1/4 cup then add 1 tbsp cacao powder and the zest and juice of 1 orange to the rest of the ingredients.

Lucuma
Add 1 tbsp lucuma powder to the rest of the ingredients.

Chai Spice
Add 1 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp nutmeg and 1/4 tsp ginger to the rest of the ingredients.
