Chai Spice Oatmeal

Chai tea is my absolute favourite flavour - it's so warming and comforting! The longer you let the tea bag infuse the more flavoursome it gets, so by the time it's at a drinkable temperature it's deliciously spicy and invigorating. 'Chai' literally means 'tea' in various languages so what we're actually saying when we talk about chai tea is 'tea tea'! However, the chai tea we're referring to is known as 'masala chai' (meaning 'mixed-spice tea') which originated in South Asia and is made using black tea and a variety of Indian spices and herbs such as cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. However, there is no fixed recipe for masala chai so you can really add whichever combination of spices you wish! I use cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg for this recipe because they're easily available and I find they're a wonderful combination which create just the right amount of spiciness. A bowl of chai-spiced oatmeal is the perfect breakfast for a chilly day and if you're a fan of the tea then you'll love this!

Serves 1
  • 2/3 cup oats
  • 1 1/3 cups milk of choice
  • 1 ripe banana
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ginger
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg

Put the oats and milk into a small saucepan, turn the heat up to the highest setting and bring the milk to a boil; once it's boiling reduce the heat to the lowest setting and let it simmer for about two minutes, stirring occasionally, until it has thickened up a bit.

Cut your banana in half and mash one half into a pulp, then mix it into the oatmeal along with the spices. Let it cook for another three or four minutes, stirring occasionally, until it's at your desired consistency. When it's ready transfer it into a bowl, add your toppings and enjoy!
